Talented Tenth Monthly Scholarly Journal

Talented Tenth is The Black Scholars Index’ Scholarly Journal.  It is published monthly online.  The name comes from W.E.B. Dubois’ notion of the Talented Tenth, as indicated in an excerpt from one of his works entitled “The Talented Tenth,” from The Negro Problem: A Series of Articles by Representative Negroes of To-day (New York, 1903).

The idea behind this journal and the website overall is to harness the gifts and talents of the Talented Tenth as a means for motivation, collaboration, and communication.  Entries focus on research from Scholars of the Black Diaspora (whether they are indexed in the Scholar Directory or not).

The inaugural issue of Talented Tenth will be released 2009 Q4.  This special issue was inspired by the following statement and the progress it describes.

“Black ancestors suffered from slavery during the time in which the frameworks for qualitative and quantitative research formed.  Since then, Black people throughout the Diaspora have overcome significant challenges and seemingly insurmountable obstacles.  Although statistics show low a percentage of Black students throughout the world pursuing advanced degrees, knowledge creation and scholarly research is conducted by Black students and professionals on a regular basis.  Evidence of this is apparent by the presence of this website and information it conveys.”

If you can relate to this statement and would like to submit an essay about your research in this inaugural issue, please submit a 2-3 page essay answering the following question.

In a time when the world hangs on the words of change and seeks its evidence even more, how will your specific area of research impact its citizens – locally and/or globally?
