Shirley Franklin: First Black Woman to be Elected Mayor of Any Major Southern City

Shirley Clarke Franklin is the 58th mayor of Atlanta, she was the first female to hold the post and became the first black woman to be elected mayor of any major Southern city. She joined Spelman College as Cosby Endowed Professor in 2009.

Ruth Simmons: 1st Black President of an Ivy League School

Ruth J. Simmons was sworn in as the 18th president of Brown University on July 3, 2001. She also holds an appointment as professor in the Department of Comparative Literature and the Department of Africana Studies. She was president of Smith College from 1995 until the time of her appointment at Brown. She is the first Black President of an Ivy League school.
