Dr. Joseph Monroe: (Retired) Dean of the College of Engineering at North Carolina A&T

Dr. Joseph Monroe was the first African American in the country to obtain a Ph.D. in computer science in 1972, from Texas A&M University. He was also a founding member of the first Computer Science Honor Society, Upsilon Pi Epsilon and the first African-American Permanent Professor at the United States Air Force Academy.

Ruth Simmons: 1st Black President of an Ivy League School

Ruth J. Simmons was sworn in as the 18th president of Brown University on July 3, 2001. She also holds an appointment as professor in the Department of Comparative Literature and the Department of Africana Studies. She was president of Smith College from 1995 until the time of her appointment at Brown. She is the first Black President of an Ivy League school.
