I was honored to meet Mr. Russell while employed at
Bell Labs, Holmdel, NJ. He is considered a genius
the Black Community. I formerly worked with the Mobile
Phone Testing at the Napierville, IL Labs. Cars were the
first to have mobile phones in cars only. The precursor to
the cell phones we use now. We can all thank Jesse Russell
for the innovative discoveries he made as a distinguished
Member of the Technical Staff. My life is better for it.

As a graduate student in one of Dr. Davis' classes in gifted education I have been afforded the opportunity to grow and become aware of a vast array of resources and curriculum offerings in gifted education.
She is indeed a tremendous teacher-educator and advocate for gifted education and the identification of the giftedness in all children.

Bravo to Dr. Joy Davis

I recently lost my brother to Lukemia. The family ask that donations in lieu of flowers be given to charity.

I learned of my brothers hidden prejudice and am deeply saddened by it. He excluded one granddaughter who married a black man and his great grandchildren who were from that marriage. He included the other grandaughter. The one he excluded is now an assoc prof of nursing working on her doctorate.

I do not have much money but would like to give something that would benefit bi racial children or studies concerning.

Your comments are welcome.

We must write our own history, or in other words, tell our unique story. Dr. Margaret Wade-Lewis was a historian. In writing the book Dr. Lorenzo Dow Turner: The Father of Gullah Studies, published by South Carolina Press, on his research and connection of the West African language dialect to "Geechee" people and the Gullah language dialect spoken during slavery, and still spoken in Georgetown, South Carolina today, she has continued his legacy, and educated many, though his findings have been used by others, who have not credited Turner's ground breaking work conducted in South Carolina, Georgia and Sierra Leone in the late twenties and thirties. He began his research in Georgetown County, South Carolina. My mother's people are from Georgetown, and so is Mrs. Obama's people on her father's side. I was raised in East Harlem, NY and recall many Georgetown stories of our family, and traditions. Mother always said "we were Geechee", and the language dialect spoken in Georgetown was Gullah.
I will be attending a Symposium on November 12, called The living legacy of Lorenzo Dow Turner:

I think Dr. Kimbrough's comments in the video are inspirational for younger men just starting their careers. His inferred message about being successful - in part - because he had a life plan and is doing what he loves matches the messages we shared with our Stutdent-Ambassadors at this year's Alpha Phi Alph Fraternity's Leadership Development Institute North. And, since my Chapter members mentor youths from 2 local programs, I plan to recommend those Brothers view Brother Kimbrough's video and add some of your verbiage during their sessions.

Dr. Donna Oliver hardly had time to savor her rise to the top ranks of higher education as a college president when she got the sobering news from her new bosses: cut the school’s budget by 5 percent immediately and be prepared for more cuts later.

“My mouth dropped open,” says Oliver, president for the past 18 months of Mississippi Valley State University, recalling the startling news she faced two weeks into her freshman year as a college president. The 60-year-old veteran higher education executive expected challenges, “but not instant budget cuts.”

The budget cutting was done, however, as have several subsequent cuts, she says. They have been achieved without major damage to the school’s core programs or employment rolls, she says, and with input from a university community advisory group she appointed. The group has helped her navigate the school through its tough economic times, challenges mirrored at colleges and universities across the state and nation.

Oliver is among a corps of career academicians making up the growing ranks of first-time presidents at historically Black colleges and universities. They are taking on the challenge of championing HBCUs for the 21st century as the schools face a growing chorus of politicians and others questioning their continued value as demands grow for the schools to beef up their academic performance and needed funds — from public and private sources — become harder to come by.

“They are very difficult jobs and more requirements are being placed on them,” says Dr. Frederick Humphries, former president of Tennessee State University and Florida A&M University, where he is now a Regents Professor.

I would like to reply to this article and make a correction. The last statement in the article says, " His most well known essay on the subject is “Racially Stuffed Shirts and Other Enemies of Mankind”: Horace Mann Bond’s parody of Segregationist Psychology in the 1950s." That article was not written by Bond but, it was written ABOUT Bond and the actual author is John P. Jackson, Jr. Thank you.

I am so inspired by your story and your accomplishments. I am a rising senior in the city of Atlanta, GA and I aspire to study medicine, specifically NeuroScience. I have been afforded the privilege of matriculating through Brown University this summer by taking two college credited courses. I am struggling to raise the funds. I would like an email address send to you my credentials and the acceptance letter from Brown in hopes of your getting a snapshot of who I am and your feeling confident that to assist me would be to assist our world in bringing up a young black man who will make a positive difference. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you in advance for your time.

I was inspired by her persistent for equality, and professional status for women of color who wanted to become registered nurses. Some of the same deterrents exsist in this 21st century . Some universities have coded applications to determine if we are "black" and admit only a certian number of "black" nurses into their programs. I discovered during my history that :white students" had be given the core nursing ,care plans, test, and preparation before we began college courses. I gain strength to continue my goals. I am a registered nurse, public health nurse and a pediatric nurse practitioner. Thank you Mary Mahoney

Thank you. Mr. Lawrence is an artist that I can relate to, finally. Even though my family had already arrived up north a generation before me, the stories that were told to me about the journey up north are as vivid in my mind as Mr. Lawrences colors in his works and has made as great of an impact as the impact of The Migration Series. I am truly inspired and have made a new discovery through his works. A sincere thank you.

I am a 37 year old black man from Ahoskie,Nc. that dropped out of school in the tenth grade to go to work to help out my family. Although people think that am educated, I do not have my GED YET! I have taken all the tests but failed the math portion. I have recently gone back to finish but am still having problems with the math. Is there a website I can go to to brush up on my algebra and percents???

This is exactly what we need. More younger kids who care more about learning/making a difference than the latest fad or going to school just for social reasons. I wish him nothing but the best and I'm pretty sure we'll be hearing his name in the next decade or so. Maybe a Mayor in a city near you!!! Awesome.

Greetings,

I was happy to read about you and your accomplishments. However, I was saddened to learn that you no longer are associated with the University of Maryland. I had been interested in the graduate program in minority and urban studies, and had hoped to have the opporunity to interact with you.

I am a third career educator. Previously, I served urban communities in pastoral ministry, director of a social service program, supervisory case manager, and family intervention specialist. Currently, I am with Options Public Charter School in DC; the oldest charter school in DC, serving EDLD middle and high school students.

I am appalled at what is happening in our schools. I am a product of DC Public Schools; I can't believe that our schools are becoming plantations; run primarily by persons desiring to have a Peace Corps experience. However, I am determined to stay with education despite my disillusionment with what I see.

As we performed research on Dr. Reaves and WSSU, we realized there's a bit of tension currently between him and the student body.

Does anyone have any factual information on what's going on at WSSU?

I know you both from a distance. Know the stock you are from up close and personal. I am a friend of your Aunt Val's and know your dad. He was like my big brother when we were in high school. I am so proud of the fine young women you have become. I know your folks are proud of your accomplishments but even more proud of your character. From a distance, let me say the world is watching and you certainly make us smile. Keep up the great work.

I just read Dr. Cosby's dissertation. It's amazing that his premise is still relevant today - just substitute television with technology (to include television as well as the web, educational media, etc.).

He has helped to confirm my research goals regarding the use of educational media to improve the learning experiences of children, specifically African-American children - regardless of family income.

I applaud his work in the 1970s and now and will be excited to cite him in my own dissertation! I can't wait!

I remember seeing his story online at the TED conference. It was such a moving account of what the power of literacy and an inquisitive mind can do for a family. I am happy to read that he is now in school. However there are thousands of young people just like William in many countries across Africa who have great potential, and little opportunity to do something with it. William is a great reminder to the world that Africans are indeed able to solve their own problems, they just need a place to develop their gifts and talents and opportunities to be leaders.

Black scholarship and academic excellence are values that were instilled in me at home, promoted in my community, and perpetuated throughout my academic career. As a proud graduate of Fisk, I can point to a historical tradition that , above all else, insisted upon scholastic achievement. I have had the pleasure of being taught by some of the most brilliant men and women I've ever known...Dr. C.Eric Lincoln, Dr. Leon H. Sullivan, Dr. Edward Jackson, Dr. Abdul Alkalimat, Dr. Gail Plummer. Sonia Sanchez. Dr. Rita Smith. Dr. L. Alex Swan.. all of these individuals and many more have inspired and motivated me. "Mainstream society" rarely gets a chance to witness , let alone apprieciate, the breadth and depth of black scholarship throughout the diaspora . This site is a constant reminder to others that Black accomplishments transcend entertainment and sports and that there are hundreds of thousands of brothers and sisters who have distinguished themselves as intellectuals giants in their chosen fields of study.Keep up the good work, fight the good fight and I will continue tobe informed and enlightened by this mosy valuable website.

I am SO impressed by the Black Scholars Index. I LOVE reading about and am deeply inspired by the stories of everyday black scholars who are truly using their education to make a difference in this world through their profession.

Through each and every story or profile that I have read, I am encouraged and uplifted. I am reminded that we have an abundance of greatness in our communities across America that should not go unnoticed. These stories, in my opinion, are much more inspiring than the tried (but true and timeless) stories of the African-American greats that are in our history books. I feel more connected and driven by those who I can relate to in some way, whether it be through a shared interest, a shared upbringing, a shared discipline, or a shared educational background.

Thank you, BSI!

INCARCERATING PEOPLE "FOR PROFIT" IS IN A WORD....WRONG!
Even if one does not ask or pretends not to see the rope and the flashing red flag draped around the philosophical question standing solemnly at attention in the middle of the room, it remains apparent that the mere presence of a private “for profit” driven prison business in our country undermines the U.S Constitution and subsequently the credibility of the American criminal justice system. In fact, until all private prisons in America have been abolished and outlawed, “the promise” of fairness and justice at every level of this country’s judicial system will remain unattainable. We must restore the principles and the vacant promise of our judicial system. Our government cannot continue to "job-out" its obligation and neglect its duty to the individuals confined in the correctional and rehabilitation facilities throughout this nation, nor can it ignore the will of the people that it was designed to serve and protect. There is urgent need for the good people of this country to emerge from the shadows of indifference, apathy, cynicism, fear, and those other dark places that we migrate to when we are overwhelmed by frustration and the loss of hope.
My hope is that you will support the National Public Service Council to Abolish Private Prisons (NPSCTAPP) with a show of solidarity by signing "The Single Voice Petition"
