Posted on 30. Aug, 2010 by Leshell Hatley in Places of Scholarly Work
The Center for African American Research and Policy (CAARP) was created in 2005, and is the research arm of the Brothers of the Academy Institute (BOTA).
Mission
Its mission is to engage in scholarly research in order to advance critical discourse and promote informed decisions as it pertains to policy issues confronting African Americans in both the academy and the society at-large. The breadth and depth of research and policy-oriented projects encompasses the full tapestry of the “African American Predicament” and reflects the wide diversity of academic backgrounds of the affiliated researchers at the Center and BOTA members.
By conducting extensive research and analysis, producing publications, giving presentations, and engaging key parties in discussion and debate, CAARP seeks to instigate positive change in the conditions of African Americans in the United States.
Journals & Publications
Annuals of the Next Generation
The Annuals of the Next Generation is a refereed, scholarly journal that seeks to provide a venue to showcase the next generation of African American scholars, by publishing the research of graduate students. This publication will highlight research from multiple disciplines and areas, and allow these young scholars to present their work to an international audience.
Occasional Paper Series
The Center’s Occasional Paper series addresses topics that are timely and intimately connected to the Center’s research agenda. Papers in this series include conceptual work, empirical data, research syntheses, discussions of community-based issues, and reports that are intended to act a catalyst for information exchange among educators, researchers, practitioners, and concerned citizens.
Policy Briefs
The Center’s Policy Briefs are documents which outline the rationale for choosing a particular policy alternative or course of action in a current policy debate. The purpose of the policy briefs is to provide empirical data to inform policy makers at all levels (e.g., institutional, state, and federal) of urgent and current problems that affect the African American community. Ultimately, these policy briefs will lead to the adoption of the preferred alternative or course of action outlined, and therefore serve as an impetus for action.
Journal of Professoriate
The Journal of the Professoriate is an international, refereed, and scholarly journal that seeks to promote lively discourse among scholars and policymakers on various issues affecting all college and university faculty in higher education in America and abroad. The primary mission of the Journal of the Professoriate is to provide an outlet for critical analysis and scholarship on issues pertaining to the pathways leading to the professoriate as well as all issues about and relevant to college and university faculty within academe and the global society.
