[HBCU Presidents] Dr. Charles E. Young: Allen University

Dr. Charles E. Young is the 23rd president of Allen University, a historically black Christian liberal arts college in Columbia, S.C.

Education

A native of Georgetown County, S.C., he was educated in Georgetown County public schools and graduated from Choppee High School. After serving two years in the United States Army, Dr. Young enrolled at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He later earned a Master of Divinity degree from Columbia International University, Columbia, S.C. His doctoral degree was earned in 1989 from Westminister Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.

Career

His professional career includes work as a probation and parole agent for the state of South Carolina, youth counselor for delinquent and runaway youth and prison chaplain for the South Carolina Department of Corrections. For fifteen years he taught theology and doctrine courses on the faculty of Columbia International University in Columbia, South Carolina.

Dr. Young is an ordained Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. His pastoral ministry includes St. Matthew A.M.E. Church and Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Church in Newberry, South Carolina, Turner Memorial AME Church in West Columbia, and Ebenezer AME Church in Charleston.

As Pastor

As a pastor Dr. Young focused on increasing membership, discipleship training, and developing ministries to the elderly and youth. He also worked extensively with persons with chemical dependency and other life’s crisis. During twenty years of pastoral ministry, Young led his congregations in capital improvements, community development, housing initiatives and economic development.

Allen University

Dr. Young continues to lead Allen University in academic excellence. He initiated academic programs to improve student reading and writing skills and an adult degree completion programs, and has engaged in partnerships with other institutions of higher education in order to provide creative ways for all segments of society to obtain an education.

Currently under his leadership Allen University has undertaken massive renovation and construction projects. He has raised funds to renovate three historic buildings and construct a new library, student dormitory, and a student life development center.

Service

Dr. Young serves on numerous boards and task forces for community services. These include South Carolina Junior Achievement Board, Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Columbia International University, and an adoption agency based in Charleston.
