Spelman's Dr. Carmen Sidbury Receives NSF Appointment

Dr. Carmen Sidbury, Ph.D., Associate Dean for sophomore and junior studies at Spelman University, has received a prestigious, one-year appointment as Program Director in the Division of Graduate Education of the National Science Foundation. Dr. Sidbury’s role involves reviewing NSF proposals and managing the awards selection process.

Dr. Sidbury obtained BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina A & T State University. After 5 years at AT&T-BL in Whippany, NJ, Carmen returned to graduate school and became the first African-American woman to earn a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech.

Dr. Sidbury has over 12 years of professional experience in technical positions at Lucent Technologies, formerly AT&T Bell Laboratories. At Lucent, she has had various assignments in telecommunications product design and development. Currently, she is leveraging her expertise and capabilities in fiber optics as Director of Opto-Mechanical Systems for Luxcore Networks, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia.

Committed to community service, Dr. Sidbury participates in the Lakewood Elementary Mentoring Program and the National Technical Association. She is an active member of the Ujamma Investment Club, where she serves as portfolio manager. She is passionate about self empowerment and is refocusing her career to align with this passion. Her career aspirations are to work in a capacity to empower more young people to connect with the power of math and science and ultimately consider technical careers.

Dr. Sidbury served as an assistant dean in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington before joining Spelman in September 2007.
