Dr. Mickey L. Burnim has served as ninth president of Bowie State University (BSU) since September 1, 2006. An economist by training, Burnim has three degrees in economics – a BA degree and an MA degree from the University of North Texas, and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He has written papers and published several scholarly articles in labor economics and public finance.

Under his leadership, Bowie State has exceeded enrollment targets for two consecutive years, which led to the University System of Maryland (USM) designating it a growth institution; built stronger relationships with alumni that led to significantly increased alumni participation and giving; revitalized and strengthened the BSU Foundation; improved campus communications; created a new Board of Visitors as well as new core values and a new shared vision for the University community; established a second doctoral program, Doctor of Applied Science in Computer Science; added other new degree programs; successfully launched its largest comprehensive fundraising campaign; and  strengthened the academic leadership by hiring a new provost and four outstanding deans.

pres2Burnim serves on the board of directors for the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Education (NAFEO), the executive committee for the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities, and he recently completed his term on the board of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).  He was recently elected to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) President’s Council for Division II.  Burnim is a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Board of Directors and The Bowie Rotary Club. In addition, he serves as an educational leadership consultant to various entities.

Prior to arriving at Bowie State University, Dr. Burnim served as the eighth chancellor for 11 years at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU). He also previously served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at North Carolina Central University. Earlier in his career, he worked as assistant vice president for academic affairs in the General Administration of the University of North Carolina; as a staff economist at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; and as a faculty member at Florida State University.
